Water Safety
-
The Florida Legislature passed the Every Child a Swimmer law which took effect on July 1, 2022. The law is designed to educate parents of newly-enrolled students about the importance of water safety and swim lessons. Each public school must provide the parents of all new students with information about local options for age-appropriate water safety courses and swimming lessons, including courses offered for free or at a reduced price.
Senate Bill 1028 (2021) Water Safety and Florida Statute 1003.225 were created to ensure that public schools provide parents with information on the importance of water safety and swim lessons.
If the student is 18 or older, or under 21 and enrolled in adult education classes, the information must be provided directly to the student. Schools are advised to share this information on their respective websites, in communications to families, and to display the information in the main office on their campus.
