Wellness
-
Wellness is a key initiative in the District and a central theme of the Superintendent’s Strategic Plan. The District acknowledges that increasing health and safety issues can impact students’ and staff's overall wellness, learning, performance, and ability to be productive citizens. Therefore, the District is committed to creating environments in schools and workplaces that support and protect emotional, behavioral, mental, and physical wellness.
The District’s Wellness Promotion Policy integrates wellness throughout schools and departments. This policy aligns with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child” (WSCC) model, which emphasizes a school-wide approach, centers on the child, and recognizes the importance of family and community involvement. The ten WSCC components of the District are listed below:
- Physical Education & Physical Activity
- Nutrition Environment & Services
- Counseling, Psychological & Social Services
- Social & Emotional Climate
- Health Education
- Health Services
- Employee Wellness
- Physical Environment
- Family Engagement
- Community Involvement
In addition to the policy, the District has established a Wellness Promotion Task Force. This forum brings together students, staff, parents, community partners, and the public to collaborate on promoting healthier lives. The Task Force’s goal is to enhance student performance by proactively addressing the health, wellness, and safety of all school children and staff.

School Gardens
The School Gardens program, managed by School Food Service, encompasses 115 active school gardens. The District offers resources for planting and harvesting, academic materials, and hands-on learning opportunities. Students can visit local farms and gardens to learn about farm-to-table practices. Additionally, the Garden Collaboration Team, comprising members from 12 internal departments, helps ensure garden compliance, maintenance, and provides input on the District’s Garden Guide.
