Pre-Medical Sciences Choice Academy

  • The Pre-Medical Science Academy offers a rigorous curriculum to increase awareness of medical professions and prepare students for high school medical programs.

What will I learn in the Pre-Medical Academy?

Pre-Medical Academy students take a medical elective each year, to explore health care occupations and human anatomy.

    • 6th grade topics: safety, responsibility, history of medicine, introduction to careers, mental health, wellness, veterinary medicine
    • 7th grade topics : anatomy and related careers, intro to first aid & CPR
    • 8th grade topics: CPR certification, medical careers & skills, 20 hours virtual job-shadowing (earns high school credit)

Students in the Pre-Medical Academy also have the opportunity to take accelerated science. The accelerated science class covers concepts at a faster pace so students complete 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science classes by the end of 7th grade and take Environmental Management for high school credit while in 8th grade. The pacing of these courses makes them more rigorous than gifted and advanced science courses.

Are there any requirements to apply for a middle school Pre-Medical Program?

While there are no requirements to apply, students need to have strong academic habits and organizational skills. It is recommended that students be at or above grade level (FAST Level 3) in reading and science as students will be working with content and instructional resources above their grade-level.

How can my student apply and participate in the Pre-Medical Academy?

Interested students MUST apply through the school district, even if Boca Middle is the student’s ‘home school.’ A lottery is conducted by the school district to assign applicants to the available number of seats.

    Pre-Medical Academy Courses:

    • Pre-Medical Academy students take a medical elective each year, to explore health care occupations and anatomy. Hands-on activities, simulations, guest speakers, and virtual job shadowing further students’ exposure to health care professions. The eighth grade medical elective earns high school elective credit.
    • Pre-Medical Academy students also take accelerated science. These courses compact 6th, 7th, and 8th grade sciences into two years to allow students to take high-school Environmental Management in 8th grade. The pacing of these courses makes them more rigorous than gifted or advanced curriculum.
