Five Star Magnet Program

Our Five Star Magnet Program is an award-winning program of Magnet Schools of America and offers students unique courses and opportunities in preparation for top post-secondary schools and future careers. Over 1,000 students are enrolled in the six program areas and take specialized classes per year that emphasize academics and important life and career skills. Communication and support from our Business Advisory Board, along with partnerships in the community, provide opportunities to strengthen our program. This combination of academics and hands-on learning prepares students to become leaders in tomorrow’s world.

AICE
The Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) Program is one of sixteen Florida School Choice Options available to students in grades K-12. The AICE program is considered an international curriculum and examination program modeled on the British pre-college curriculum and ‘A-Level’ exams. Florida’s public colleges and universities provide college credit for successfully passing exams. Students in Florida’s public secondary schools enrolled in AICE courses do not have to pay to take the exams.

Culinary Arts
The Culinary program has been designed to provide practical hands-on experiences to prepare students for careers in the food service industry. Culinary Arts I covers the history of the food service industry; safety in the workplace; employability skills; leadership/teamwork skills; care and use of commercial culinary equipment; basic food science; basic nutrition; and following recipes in food preparation labs.
Students then learn front-of-the house and back-of-the-house duties in Culinary Arts II. During this course they also prepare quality food products and present them creatively; demonstrate safe, sanitary work procedures, understand food science principles related to cooking and baking; and utilize nutrition concepts when planning meals/menus.
Students then specialize with higher-level courses during their junior and senior years. In Culinary Arts III the student will research career opportunities in professional cooking/baking; follow guidelines on food selection, purchasing, and storage; and use communication skills. Students will prepare and present a variety of advanced food products; create centerpieces; and research laws specific to the hospitality industry (including handling of alcohol). Also covered are management skills; how to develop a business plan; and utilization of technology in the workplace. Students will be knowledgeable about food safety manager training programs that are acceptable in Florida. Finally, in Culinary Arts IV, students will prepare various meals and food products including those for individuals with various nutritional needs and/or dietary restrictions. The relationship between nutrition and wellness will be examined. Cost control techniques and profitability will be covered as well as analysis of food establishment menus. Students will also demonstrate basic financial literacy skills and earn SERVSAFE industry certification.
Students’ activities may include:- Culinary Internships in areas of interest, providing real world insight into the industry
- Catering performed for visiting officials and dignitaries, as well as off campus catering opportunities
- Culinary competitions with other schools
- A chance to join the National Technical Honor Society and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America
- Freshman Student Mentoring Program
- Gator Bites Cafe
These experiences are invaluable in preparing students for post-secondary schools and success in the world of business.

Global Business and Entrepreneurship
The Global Business and Entrepreneurship program has been designed to simulate a college curriculum. Students take cornerstone courses their freshman and sophomore years, which give them essential skills, and an overview in the Global Business area through guest speakers, field trips, and the use of technology. Participation in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and R.O.P.E.S. leadership training helps magnet students enhance their skills in communication, problem solving, teamwork and computer technology.
Students then specialize with higher-level capstone courses during their junior and senior years. This leads to eligibility for the Bright Futures Scholarship Program and a paid internship at a local business where students can apply the knowledge they learned in class in a real world environment. Students also volunteer at local elementary and middle schools through teaching Junior Achievement programs and specialized reading programs. This integration of curriculum prepares students for top universities while giving them experiences they can build on their whole lives.
Students specializing in Global Business and Entrepreneurship are prepared with business skills necessary to become successful entrepreneurs and leaders in the global marketplace. With Entrepreneurship magazine recently voting Palm Beach County #1 in the nation for small business growth, opportunities are endless.
Students’ activities include:- Membership in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)
- Paid Executive Internships at such places as Fidelity Federal, North Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce, and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Palm Beach County
- Setting up and running an international company in GLOBE Economics, a Junior Achievement course in which students have worked directly with sister schools in Japan, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, and Scotland
- Field trips to such places as New York City, the Port of Palm Beach, the Federal Reserve in Miami, and the Palm Beach County Courthouse
- Freshman Student Mentoring Program
- Teaching Junior Achievement courses at local elementary schools

Medical Sciences - Pre-Medicine
Students in the Pre-Medicine Program follow an extensive four-year college preparatory program designed to prepare the university-bound student for a Pre-Med, Nursing, Pre-Vet, Pre-Pharmacy or Pre-Dental major. The rigorous specialized curriculum includes emphasis on honors and advanced placement courses. The Junior level offers the Pathophysiology and Clinical Preceptorship courses incorporate a Hands-on CPR Juniors Experience in chronic and acute care facilities. Senior year offers courses in Emergency Medical Responder, EKG Technician, Clinical Internship or Externship and Directed Study. Students graduate with an Honors Allied Health Assisting Certificate from the Florida Department of Education and depending upon completion of the corresponding program coursework, take the state certification Nursing Assisting exam, as well as national certification exam for Certified Medical Administrative Assistant, EKG Technician, or Patient Care Technician.
This program emphasizes the following:- Courses that stress science, the development of communication skills, legal and ethical practice, medical knowledge and career specific skills performed by health care professionals. Students are also certified as American Heart Association Basic Life Support Providers.
- A clinical preceptorship with hands-on care and observation of patients in chronic and acute care facilities such as Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, HCR Manor Care, Arden Courts, and ride time with Palm Beach Gardens Fire and Rescue.
- Active involvement in community service projects such as: Alzheimer’s Halloween Dance and Winter Ball, Mo and Sally Dueling Toy Drive, Children’s Medical Services Holiday Party, the Mock Mass Casualty Simulations, Hands-Only CPR, Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches and the Palm Beach Marathon.
Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA)
Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is the student organization for the Pre-Med Magnet Program. Involvement in HOSA increases leadership skills and incorporates curriculum at the different grade levels in order to reinforce real world applications. Additionally, students have an opportunity to participate in school wide Blood Drives and fundraisers for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as well as Juvenile Diabetes and Cystic Fibrosis.
Since 1991, Palm Beach Gardens High School students have attended yearly state and national conferences in such places as California, Tennessee, Texas, and Florida. The Palm Beach Gardens High School HOSA Chapter has consistently been a leader in earning top awards at the HOSA National Leadership Conferences. These top awards have included medals in CPR/First Aid, Sports Medicine, Nursing Assisting, Medical/Dental Spelling, HOSA Bowl and Week, Medical Reading, Pathophysiology, Biomedical Debate, Pharmacology, Human Growth and Development, Medical/Dental Terminology, Nutrition, Kaiser Health Care Issues, Researched Persuasive Speaking, Career Health Display, Extemporaneous Health Poster and Writing, and Outstanding HOSA Chapter.

Navy JROTC
The Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program teaches self–discipline, self–confidence and leadership skills to meet life’s challenges. The naval science curriculum includes seamanship, oceanography, meteorology, astronomy, radar, sonar electronics, and leadership. Instruction consists of formal classroom training supplemented by field trips to various naval facilities. Upon completion, students are not obligated to enlist in the armed forces. Completing the NJROTC program allows entry into the armed forces up to two pay grades higher than other enlistees without NJROTC experience.

Sports Management and Recreation
The Sports Management and Recreation program has been designed to simulate a college curriculum. Students take cornerstone courses their freshman and sophomore years which give them essential skills and an overview in the Sports Management and area through guest speakers, field trips, and the use of technology. Participation in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and R.O.P.E.S. leadership training helps magnet students enhance their skills in communication, problem solving, teamwork, and computer technology with an opportunity to earn the Microsoft Office Specialist industry certification.
Students then specialize with higher-level courses during their junior and senior years. This leads to eligibility for the Bright Futures Scholarship Program and a paid internship at a local business where students can apply the knowledge they learned in class in a real world environment. Students also volunteer at local elementary and middle schools through teaching Junior Achievement programs and specialized reading programs. This integration of curriculum prepares students for top universities while giving them experiences they can build on their whole lives.
Currently, Palm Beach County is taking advantage of its location and weather to increase the number of sporting events in South Florida. There are major and minor league baseball teams with a great baseball stadium. Through internships and projects, the Sports Management and Recreation Magnet students have many opportunities to apply the business knowledge they are learning in their classes while preparing for college.
Activities include:- Management of our Annual Magnet Golf Tournament that has raised over $140,000 for our programs
- Paid executive internships at such places as Roger Dean Stadium, PGA National Resort, Palm Beach County Sports Commission, and Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation
- Sporting event management of a Palm Beach Gardens High School varsity baseball game at Roger Dean Stadium, and Palm Beach County Sports Commission’s Lou Groza Awards
- Field trips to such places as New York City, BankAtlantic Center, American Airlines Arena, and Roger Dean Stadium
- Volunteering at special events such as the Buddy Walk, Race for the Cure, and activities at local recreation departments, and elementary schools
- Freshman Student Mentoring Program
- Teaching Junior Achievement courses at local elementary schools
These real life experiences prepare students for a future in the exciting sports industry.

Television and Film Production Technology
The Television and Film Production Technology Program teaches students professionalism through hands-on training and real-life experiences. Students are prepared to function as members of a production team by actually working in the same environment found in television, radio, and production facilities. Students also learn the art of interviewing and news-gathering techniques.
Educational activities include:- GNN, The Gator News Network, is a daily in school broadcast that informs students and faculty about activities, sporting events and school policies
- Special projects, such as student-produced dramas, comedies, and videos that have included public service announcements for Peggy Adams Animal Rescue, and Teen Hotline
- Videos submitted to state competitions including F.A.M.E. and the Palm Beach County Film Festival
- Live streaming of Palm Beach Gardens High School home sporting events with Play On Sports
- Juniors and seniors take trips to such places as New York City and go backstage on various television shows and production facilities such as Good Morning America, The Chew, Katie, and The People’s Court
- Gator Film Festival
- Palm Beach Gardens High School Gator Radio Station on Live 365
- Internships at local stations
- Earn Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Photoshop Industry Certifications

Tourism, Hospitality and Resort Management
The Tourism, Hospitality, and Resort Management program has been designed to simulate a college curriculum. Students take cornerstone courses their freshman and sophomore years which give them essential skills and an overview in the Tourism, Hospitality, and Resort Management area through guest speakers, field trips, and the use of technology. Participation in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and R.O.P.E.S. leadership training helps magnet students enhance their skills in communication, problem solving, teamwork and computer technology.
Students then specialize with higher level courses during their junior and senior years. This leads to eligibility for the Bright Futures Scholarship Program and a paid internship at a local business where students can apply the knowledge they learned in class in a real world environment. Students also volunteer at local elementary and middle schools through teaching Junior Achievement programs and specialized reading programs. This integration of curriculum prepares students for top universities while giving them experiences they can build on their whole lives. Articulation agreements with leading Florida colleges and universities offer college credit for outstanding academic performance in tourism classes. We are a part of the NAF network of over 630 schools nationally.
Students can begin now to prepare to be a professional in a multi-trillion dollar worldwide industry that is already the largest in Florida and will soon be the world’s largest employer. They can take advantage of a program that integrates unique high school courses with practical work experience in the field, all while preparing for college.

These include management and promotion of hotels and resorts, airlines and cruise lines, five star restaurants and catering services, convention centers, theme parks, yacht marinas, ski chalets, and other industries. With 43 million visitors last year, Florida continues to be a travel destination for many people around the world. Our students can be part of this exciting industry!
