Computer Applications

Intensive Reading
An intensive reading class is required for students who are reading below grade level. This requirement is mandated by Florida law.Intensive Math
An intensive math class may be required for students who are performing below grade level in math. -
Language Arts
Language Arts includes the study of literature and literary analysis, the writing process for both informative and argumentative essays, vocabulary, and grammar.
Language arts classes are offered for regular, advanced, and gifted levels. Placement is based upon a variety of assessments and teacher recommendations.

Physical Education
Students are required in the State of Florida to participate in PE for a half of each year of middle school. This can be waived with parent approval. The waiver is located on course selection form.
6th grade
In this personal fitness class, students learn to identify the components of fitness and the types of activities that are beneficial to the individual components. Line dancing, small group games, kickball, pillo polo, Kan Jam, bound ball, and pickleball are some of the activities incorporated into this course to help students learn about the components of fitness.7th grade
In this team sports class, students develop skills and strategies leading up to playing small group games. Examples of sports that could be included in this course are flag football, volleyball, floorball, basketball, handball, and ultimate disc. A fitness unit is also incorporated into this course. The goal of the fitness unit is for students to have a working knowledge of fitness so that they can identify ways they can live a healthy, active lifestyle.8th grade
In this individual and dual sports class, students work on skills and strategies of sports in 1 vs 1 and 2 vs 2 situations. A wide variety of sports is utilized for this concept. Some examples include basketball, pickleball, racketball, bound ball, roundnet, crossnet, and tennis. -

- Earth Science (weathering, erosion, landforms, weather, climate, atmosphere, water cycle)

- Physical Science (energy, forces, motion)
7th Grade
Courses Offered: Regular and Accelerated Advanced
Major Concepts Covered:- Nature of Science (scientific method, experimental design, data collection and analysis)
- Earth Science (rock cycle, plate tectonics, geological time)
- Life Science (evolution, ecology, Everglades, DNA, genetics, human growth and development)
- Physical Science (waves, energy, light)
- Environmental Impact to the Life Sciences
7th grade Accelerated Advanced Science covers all of the 7th grade benchmarks above as well as all of the Space Science & Life Science concepts covered in regular 8th grade science. Accelerated Advanced is a MANDATORY pre-requisite for the high school credit class, Physical Science Honors.

- Physical Science (atomic theory, elements, periodic table, physical/chemical properties and changes, energy, energy transformations and transfers, force + motion, Newton’s laws, waves, work, power)
- Space Science (solar system, universe, Earth-moon-sun system, sun and stars)
*Physical Science Honors is a HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSE (PHYSICAL SCIENCE CREDIT).
7th Accelerated Advanced Science is a MANDATORY pre-requisite for this course OR satisfactory completion of FLVS 8th grade integrated science course.
All 8th grade students will take the SSA (Statewide Science Assessment). Review of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade concepts will be infused throughout the year with the help of the computer-based program called STUDY ISLAND.

Social Studies
6th grade World History
The course of study for sixth grade is World History. The curriculum covers geography concepts and world history from the beginning of civilization through the Roman Empire. Learning strategies for this course encourage students to organize and connect global concepts, to analyze, synthesize and summarize information, and to utilize various of types of materials to obtain information.7th grade Civics
The course of study for seventh grade is Civics. Civics is the study of American government and the study of the rights and duties of citizens. It focuses on the branches of government and the powers given to all levels of government. All students are required to take an End-of-Course (EOC) Civics Assessment. This assessment is 30% of the overall course grade and passing is required for promotion to high school.8th grade United States History
The course study for eighth grade is United States history. This course covers the events between 1492 and 1865. Studies include the cultural and political events that have forged our country. Strategies include problem solving, writing, analyzing, debating, and creating in-depth group and individual projects to hone learning and life skills that will be of benefit across all subject areas.
