Human Growth & Development

  • Reproductive Health and Disease Education (Human Growth and Development). According to State Statute 1003.42(5), any student whose parent makes written request to the school principal shall be exempted from the teaching of reproductive health or any disease, including HIV/AIDS, its symptoms, development, and treatment.

A student so exempted may not be penalized by reason of that exemption. Course descriptions for comprehensive health education shall not interfere with the local determination of appropriate curriculum which reflects local values and concerns.

Each school district shall, on the district’s website homepage, notify parents of this right and the process to request an exemption. The home page must include a link for a student’s parent to access and review the instructional materials, as defined in s. 1006.29(2), used to teach the curriculum.

In addition, each school also sends home a Human Growth and Development Study Exemption Form (PBSD 21402140SP2140CR, and 2140PO) prior to the lessons being taught.

All materials are available for review at each individual school upon request and on the Human Growth & Development website. Any parent choosing to opt their child out of instruction must write a letter to the school principal requesting that the student be excused from the lessons, or return the signed Opt-Out form to the school.

Alternate learning will take place for a student excused from said lessons pertinent to health education content, exclusive of content from which the student is exempted.
