The School District of Palm Beach County received a U.S. Department of Education Green District Award in 2013. This prestigious award recognizes school districts that reduce environmental impact and costs, improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and provide effective environmental and sustainability education.
To support the District's go-green journey, the Environmental & Conservation Services (ECS) Department leads the Sustainable Schools initiative. This program provides resources and guidance to schools and departments participating in waste reduction & recycling, energy & water conservation, and other green practices that support a healthy school environment.

Emphasizing this commitment, the District's Strategic Plan prioritizes getting middle school students outside the classroom to experience nature while supporting science curriculum standards.

The initiative's core mission is to drive systemic change by advocating best practices like waste reduction, recycling, energy efficiency, water conservation, and the restoration of natural preserves on school grounds.
