Reading Programs
Book Taco
Book Taco is a commercial reading motivational program. Titles included in the program were selected by Book Taco and not by the School District. Inclusion of a title on this list does not indicate a recommendation or endorsement of the book’s content by the School District of Palm Beach County. Certain books may not be age appropriate when the student is reading at an advanced level and may not meet District criteria within SDPBC Policy 8.12. Further, the books included in Book Taco should not be considered an exclusive reading list from which students must select their books to read. No school classroom or library media center has all the books found on Book Taco. District purchased library media center and supplemental classroom instructional materials, on the other hand, adhere to the selection criteria found in SDPBC Policy 8.12. The Book Taco program is used to measure word counts for our Million Word Readers club and for extra credit in our ELA classes for 100,000 words read each quarter.Million Word Club
At Western Pines, our students reach the Million Word Club status when they have read one million words or more based on Book Taco. Students receive a certificate and an invitation to a lunch celebration. Other forms of recognition will be presented, when possible. Their achievements are also recognized at the grade level end of the year award ceremonies.Battle of the Books
At Western Pines Middle School, we participate in Battle of the Books that is sponsored by our school district. Students are encouraged to read the books selected by the SSYRA committee for summer reading as well as throughout the year. Meetings for Battle of the Books will be held on selected dates before school in our Media Center.
