Medical Sciences - Pre-Medicineent

  • The First Two Years

    Medical Academy students begin their first year taking Health Science Anatomy and Physiology. 

    This course is part of the secondary Health Core consisting of an overview of the human body, both structurally and functionally with emphasis on the pathophysiology and transmission of disease.  Medical terminology is an integral part of the course.

    In the second year, Medical students take Health Science Foundations. This course is part of the Secondary Health Core designed to provide the student with an in depth knowledge of the health care system and associated occupations. Emphasis is placed on communication and interpersonal skills, use of technology, ethics and the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students may shadow professionals throughout the course. 

    CNA & Home Health Aide

    This is a double blocked class so students will get additional time working with patients in several care facilities and have the opportunity to earn two Industry Certification exams: Certified Nursing Assistant and Certified Patient Care Technician.

    EKG Tech

    Electrocardiograph Technician
    This program offers a sequence of courses that provides coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in the Health Science career cluster; provides technical skill proficiency, and includes competency-based applied learning that contributes to the academic knowledge, higher-order reasoning and problem-solving skills, work attitudes, general employability skills, technical skills, and occupation-specific skills, and knowledge of all aspects of Health Science career cluster. 

    The content includes but is not limited to planning, management, finance, technical and production skills, underlying principles of technology, labor issues, community issues and health, safety, and environmental issues. Clinical learning experiences are an integral part of this program.

    The program is designed to prepare students for employment as EKG Technicians. This is a full year course and students have the opportunity to take the EKG Tech Industry Certification Exam.

    Course Sequence:
    Freshman year: Health Science Anatomy and Physiology (Honors Level)
    Sophomore year: Health Science Foundation (Honors Level)
    Junior year: Certified Nursing Assistant 3 with Allied Health. (This is a double blocked class which can be taken in your junior or senior year.) (Honors Level)
    or
    EKG 
    Senior year: Medical Elective

    Industry Certifications:
    Certified EKG Technical Exam
    Students in this program may go on  at area hospitals and/or doctors offices. Students and parents are solely responsible for transportation to those sites at designated times during the school day. Students will also have to submit to vaccinations, medical exams, background checks, and drug screening tests as required by those locations.

    EMR

    Emergency Medical Responders
    This is an instructional program that prepares individuals to provide initial care to sick or injured persons or as ambulance drivers and attendants. The Emergency Medical Responder is the first to arrive at the scene of an injury but does not have the primary responsibility for treating and transporting the injured person(s). Emergency Medical Responders may include law enforcement, , fire services, or basic life support non-licensed personnel who act as part of an organized emergency medical services team.

    Course Sequence:
    Freshman year: Health Science Anatomy and Physiology (Honors Level)
    Sophomore year: Health Science Foundations (Honors Level)
    Junior year: Medical Elective (Honors Level)
    Senior year: EMR 3

    Students in this program will go on many field trips at area medical facilities. Students and parents are solely responsible for transportation to those sites at designated times during the school day. Students will also have to submit to vaccinations, medical exams, and drug screening tests.

    Medical Laboratory

    Medical Laboratory Assisting
    This is a  program. Students will have the opportunity to earn two industry Certification exams. Year one includes Certified Medical Administrative Assistant and year two is CPT, Certified Phlebotomy Technician. 

    This program offers a sequence of courses that provides coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in the Health Science career cluster; provides technical skill proficiency, and includes competency-based applied learning that contributes to the academic knowledge, higher-order reasoning and problem-solving skills, work attitudes, general employability skills, technical skills, and occupation-specific skills, and knowledge of all aspects of Health Science career cluster.

    The content includes but is not limited to planning, management, finance, technical and production skills, underlying principles of technology, labor issues, community issues and health, safety, and environmental issues. Clinical learning experiences are an integral part of this program.

    The program is designed to prepare students for employment as medical/clinical lab technicians.
